How to Install & Set Up Argo CD

Install Argo CD into Kubernetes for declarative GitOps continuous delivery, then log in and sync your first application from Git.

Prerequisites

  • ✓A Kubernetes cluster (v1.25+) and kubectl configured
  • ✓A Git repository containing your Kubernetes manifests

Install Argo CD

terminal
kubectl create namespace argocd
kubectl apply -n argocd -f https://raw.githubusercontent.com/argoproj/argo-cd/stable/manifests/install.yaml

Access the API/UI and log in

Port-forward the server, then get the auto-generated admin password.

terminal
kubectl port-forward svc/argocd-server -n argocd 8080:443

# in another terminal — the initial admin password:
kubectl -n argocd get secret argocd-initial-admin-secret \
  -o jsonpath="{.data.password}" | base64 -d; echo

Install the CLI and create an app

terminal
# install the argocd CLI (Linux):
curl -sSL -o argocd https://github.com/argoproj/argo-cd/releases/latest/download/argocd-linux-amd64
sudo install -m 555 argocd /usr/local/bin/argocd

argocd login localhost:8080
argocd app create guestbook \
  --repo https://github.com/argoproj/argocd-example-apps.git \
  --path guestbook --dest-server https://kubernetes.default.svc --dest-namespace default
argocd app sync guestbook
!

Both the manifest apply and the CLI binary are OS-agnostic — Argo CD runs inside your cluster, and the argocd CLI is a single Go binary with the same download for RHEL and Ubuntu.
