Updated 20263-step setupDownload Chef Infra →

Prerequisites

  • ✓A workstation (Linux, macOS, or Windows) to author cookbooks
  • ✓Target nodes reachable over SSH/WinRM

Install Chef Workstation

Linux / macOS
curl -L https://omnitruck.chef.io/install.sh | sudo bash -s -- -P chef-workstation
Windows (Chocolatey)
choco install chef-workstation

Verify the installation

terminal
chef -v
!

The omnitruck installer script already detects your distro and picks the right package (deb on Debian/Ubuntu, rpm on RHEL/Fedora/Amazon Linux) automatically — no separate RHEL-specific command needed.

Generate and apply your first cookbook

terminal
chef generate cookbook my_cookbook
cd my_cookbook
# apply it locally without a Chef Server:
sudo chef-client --local-mode --runlist 'recipe[my_cookbook::default]'
