How to Install & Set Up Crossplane

Install Crossplane into a Kubernetes cluster to provision and manage cloud infrastructure declaratively from the Kubernetes API.

Updated 20264-step setupDownload Crossplane →

Prerequisites

  • ✓A running Kubernetes cluster (v1.25+) and kubectl configured
  • ✓Helm 3 installed

Install Crossplane with Helm

terminal
helm repo add crossplane-stable https://charts.crossplane.io/stable
helm repo update
helm install crossplane \
  --namespace crossplane-system --create-namespace \
  crossplane-stable/crossplane

Verify the installation

terminal
kubectl get pods -n crossplane-system
!

Helm and kubectl are the entire install surface — Crossplane deploys into your cluster, not onto the host OS, so this Helm command is identical on RHEL, Fedora, Debian, or Ubuntu.

Install the Crossplane CLI

The kubectl crossplane plugin helps you build and push configuration packages.

terminal
curl -sL https://raw.githubusercontent.com/crossplane/crossplane/master/install.sh | sh
sudo mv crossplane /usr/local/bin

Build from source

Crossplane is a standard Go/Kubernetes-controller project with a Makefile, so a from-source build is genuinely documented.

terminal
git clone https://github.com/crossplane/crossplane.git
cd crossplane
make build
