How to Install & Set Up Docker Distribution (Registry)

Run the open source Docker Distribution registry — the reference implementation behind Docker Hub's protocol — in one container.

Prerequisites

  • ✓A host with Docker installed

Run the registry

terminal
docker run -d -p 5000:5000 --name registry \
  -v registry-data:/var/lib/registry \
  registry:2

Push and pull an image

terminal
docker pull alpine
docker tag alpine localhost:5000/alpine
docker push localhost:5000/alpine
docker pull localhost:5000/alpine
!

For remote use, put a reverse proxy with TLS in front of the registry — Docker refuses plain-HTTP registries other than localhost by default.

Verify

terminal
curl http://localhost:5000/v2/_catalog
!

This registry ships as a container image and nothing else — the same docker run works identically whether the host is RHEL, Fedora, Debian, or Ubuntu.
