How to Install & Set Up Envoy

Install the Envoy proxy — the high-performance edge/service proxy behind most service meshes — with func-e or Docker.

Prerequisites

  • ✓A Linux host, or Docker
  • ✓An envoy.yaml bootstrap configuration

Option A — Install with func-e

terminal
curl https://func-e.io/install.sh | sudo bash -s -- -b /usr/local/bin
func-e use 1.31.0
func-e run -c envoy.yaml

Option B — Run with Docker

terminal
docker run --rm -it \
  -p 9901:9901 -p 10000:10000 \
  -v $(pwd)/envoy.yaml:/etc/envoy/envoy.yaml \
  envoyproxy/envoy:v1.31-latest

Verify

The admin interface is on port 9901:

terminal
curl http://localhost:9901/ready
!

func-e and the Docker image both work the same on RHEL and Ubuntu. Envoy itself is open source C++ built with Bazel, but that build is heavy (an hour-plus, multiple GB of dependencies) — not a realistic quick path, which is why func-e (which fetches a prebuilt binary) is the recommended route even for contributors.
