Prerequisites

  • ✓A Linux host (very modest resources — 512 MB RAM is enough for small teams)

Option A — Single binary

terminal
wget -O gitea https://dl.gitea.com/gitea/1.22/gitea-1.22-linux-amd64
chmod +x gitea
sudo useradd --system --create-home --home-dir /home/git --shell /bin/bash git
sudo mv gitea /usr/local/bin/gitea
gitea web

Option B — Docker

terminal
docker run -d --name gitea \
  -p 3000:3000 -p 222:22 \
  -v gitea:/data \
  gitea/gitea:latest

Verify and finish setup

Open http://your-host:3000 and complete the web installer (database, admin account, and site settings).

!

The binary and Docker image are already the same download for RHEL and Ubuntu — Gitea has no separate distro-native packages beyond community-maintained ones.

Build from source

Gitea is Go and fully open source under MIT, with a documented Make-based build.

terminal
git clone https://github.com/go-gitea/gitea.git
cd gitea
TAGS="bindata" make build
