How to Install & Set Up Gitea Actions

Enable Gitea Actions — GitHub Actions-compatible CI built into Gitea — and register an act_runner to execute workflows.

Updated 20263-step setupDownload Gitea Actions →

Prerequisites

  • ✓A running Gitea instance (v1.19+) you administer
  • ✓Docker on the machine that will run the runner

Enable Actions in Gitea

Add the following to Gitea's app.ini and restart Gitea.

app.ini
[actions]
ENABLED = true

Register an act_runner

Create a registration token under Site Administration → Actions → Runners, then register and start the runner.

download the binary (any Linux distro)
wget -O act_runner https://dl.gitea.com/act_runner/latest/act_runner-latest-linux-amd64
chmod +x act_runner
terminal
./act_runner register \
  --instance https://gitea.example.com \
  --token YOUR_REGISTRATION_TOKEN
./act_runner daemon
!

The act_runner binary is distro-agnostic — same download for RHEL and Ubuntu. It's also a plain Go project, so `git clone https://gitea.com/gitea/act_runner && make build` is a genuine from-source option.

Verify

Add a workflow at .gitea/workflows/demo.yaml in a repository; the runner picks it up on the next push. Confirm the runner shows as Online in the admin panel.
