How to Install & Set Up Grafana Loki

Install Grafana Loki for log aggregation that plugs straight into Grafana — the quick way with Docker Compose, or as a single binary.

Prerequisites

  • ✓A Linux host with Docker (compose method) or Grafana to visualize logs

Option A — Docker Compose (Loki + Promtail + Grafana)

terminal
wget https://raw.githubusercontent.com/grafana/loki/main/production/docker-compose.yaml -O docker-compose.yaml
docker compose -f docker-compose.yaml up -d

Option B — Single binary

terminal
curl -O -L "https://github.com/grafana/loki/releases/latest/download/loki-linux-amd64.zip"
unzip loki-linux-amd64.zip
curl -O -L "https://raw.githubusercontent.com/grafana/loki/main/cmd/loki/loki-local-config.yaml"
./loki-linux-amd64 -config.file=loki-local-config.yaml

Verify

In Grafana, add a Loki data source pointing at http://localhost:3100 and explore your logs.

terminal
curl http://localhost:3100/ready
!

Both options above are already distro-agnostic (Docker Compose, or a static Go binary) — no separate RHEL path is needed.

Build from source

terminal
git clone https://github.com/grafana/loki.git
cd loki
make loki
