How to Install & Set Up Proxmox VE
Deploy the Proxmox Virtual Environment — KVM virtual machines and LXC containers with a built-in web UI — from the ISO or on top of Debian.
Prerequisites
- ✓A 64-bit host with a CPU that supports Intel VT-x / AMD-V virtualization
- ✓At least 2 GB RAM (much more for real workloads) and a dedicated disk
- ✓Debian 12 (Bookworm) if installing on top of an existing OS
Option A — Bare-metal ISO installer (recommended)
Download the Proxmox VE ISO, write it to a USB stick, boot the target machine from it, and follow the graphical installer. This gives you a purpose-built hypervisor with ZFS support out of the box.
- •Write the ISO with balenaEtcher, Rufus (DD mode), or dd on Linux.
- •Choose the target disk, timezone, and a management IP during setup.
- •After reboot, the web UI is available on port 8006.
Option B — Install on top of Debian 12
Verify the installation
Browse to https://your-server-ip:8006 and log in as root with the system password. On the CLI:
Proxmox VE is built on, and only officially supports, Debian — there is no RHEL/CentOS/Fedora variant, and no supported source build. If you specifically need a RHEL-family hypervisor host, see the OpenStack or OpenNebula guides instead.
