How to Install & Set Up Rancher

Install Rancher to manage multiple Kubernetes clusters from one UI — the fast Docker single-node way, or with Helm for production.

Prerequisites

  • ✓For the quick start: a host with Docker
  • ✓For production: an existing Kubernetes cluster, Helm, and cert-manager

Option A — Single-node with Docker (evaluation)

terminal
docker run -d --restart=unless-stopped \
  -p 80:80 -p 443:443 \
  --privileged \
  rancher/rancher:latest
!

Retrieve the bootstrap password from the container logs: docker logs <container-id> 2>&1 | grep 'Bootstrap Password'.

Option B — Production with Helm

terminal
helm repo add rancher-stable https://releases.rancher.com/server-charts/stable
kubectl create namespace cattle-system
helm install rancher rancher-stable/rancher \
  --namespace cattle-system \
  --set hostname=rancher.example.com

Verify the installation

Open https://your-host and set the admin password to complete setup.

!

Both install paths run inside Docker or a Kubernetes cluster, so neither one differs between RHEL-family and Debian-family hosts — the only OS-level prerequisite is Docker Engine or Kubernetes itself being installed already.
