How to Install & Set Up VictoriaMetrics

Run VictoriaMetrics — a fast, cost-efficient, Prometheus-compatible time series database — as a single binary or container.

Updated 20264-step setupDownload VictoriaMetrics →

Prerequisites

  • ✓A Linux host
  • ✓A Prometheus or vmagent instance to remote-write metrics (optional)

Download the single-node binary

terminal
curl -LO https://github.com/VictoriaMetrics/VictoriaMetrics/releases/download/v1.102.0/victoria-metrics-linux-amd64-v1.102.0.tar.gz
tar xzf victoria-metrics-linux-amd64-v1.102.0.tar.gz
./victoria-metrics-prod -storageDataPath=./vm-data -retentionPeriod=6
!

The server listens on :8428 and speaks the Prometheus remote-write and query APIs.

Alternative — Docker

terminal
docker run -d -p 8428:8428 \
  -v vmdata:/victoria-metrics-data \
  victoriametrics/victoria-metrics

Verify

terminal
curl http://localhost:8428/health
!

Both install methods above already work identically on RHEL and Ubuntu — the tarball is a static Go binary and Docker abstracts the host OS entirely.

Build from source

VictoriaMetrics is Go and fully open source, so building it yourself is the same handful of commands the release tarballs come from.

terminal
git clone https://github.com/VictoriaMetrics/VictoriaMetrics.git
cd VictoriaMetrics
make victoria-metrics
