How to Install & Set Up Zabbix

Install the Zabbix server, frontend, and agent on Ubuntu for enterprise-grade monitoring of networks, servers, and applications.

Prerequisites

  • ✓Ubuntu 22.04 host
  • ✓A database server (MySQL/MariaDB or PostgreSQL)
  • ✓A web server (Apache or Nginx) for the frontend

Add the Zabbix repository on Ubuntu

terminal
wget https://repo.zabbix.com/zabbix/6.4/ubuntu/pool/main/z/zabbix-release/zabbix-release_6.4-1+ubuntu22.04_all.deb
sudo dpkg -i zabbix-release_6.4-1+ubuntu22.04_all.deb
sudo apt update

Add the Zabbix repository on RHEL / CentOS Stream / Rocky Linux 9

terminal
sudo rpm -Uvh https://repo.zabbix.com/zabbix/6.4/rhel/9/x86_64/zabbix-release-6.4-1.el9.noarch.rpm
sudo dnf clean all

Install server, frontend, and agent

apt (Ubuntu)
sudo apt install -y zabbix-server-mysql zabbix-frontend-php \
  zabbix-apache-conf zabbix-sql-scripts zabbix-agent
dnf (RHEL family)
sudo dnf install -y zabbix-server-mysql zabbix-web-mysql \
  zabbix-apache-conf zabbix-sql-scripts zabbix-agent

Create the database and import the schema

terminal
sudo mysql -uroot -e "create database zabbix character set utf8mb4 collate utf8mb4_bin;"
sudo mysql -uroot -e "create user zabbix@localhost identified by 'password';"
sudo mysql -uroot -e "grant all privileges on zabbix.* to zabbix@localhost;"
zcat /usr/share/zabbix-sql-scripts/mysql/server.sql.gz | mysql --default-character-set=utf8mb4 -uzabbix -p zabbix
!

Set DBPassword in /etc/zabbix/zabbix_server.conf, then restart zabbix-server, zabbix-agent, and apache2 (or httpd on RHEL). Finish setup at http://your-host/zabbix (default login Admin / zabbix).
